Excellent delicacies, prepared according to traditional recipes, will enable you to relive at home the experience of your Ballenberg visit. What is on offer varies according to season and includes jams, syrup, dried fruits, and bottled vegetables and fruits. And of course, bread, sausages and cheese.
Bread baked in a wood-burning oven à la Ballenberg: already early in the morning a tempting aroma comes from the small bakery near the West entrance (retired farmer's house Detligen BE, 333). And when the fine brown or five-corn bread comes out of the oven, it is difficult to resist. Many a loaf, intended for eating at home, often does not survive the Ballenberg visit. Brown bread is available daily at CHF 3.50 and CHF 7 for 400 gr. and 800 gr. respectively. Five-corn bread costs CHF 4 for 500 gr. Occasionally, there is also a hedgehog-shaped loaf and our baker even bakes a wonderful «rose-bread» to order.
Cheese: anyone who has ever tasted our home-made «Mutschli» cheese will know: there is nothing better than a good alpine cheese! Mutschli is made here daily out of fresh cow's milk and is ready for sale after about 3 weeks of careful attention. That is much less than in the case of mountain cheese, which is kept for one or even two years in storage, turned x-times and washed with brine before it is sold. In addition to Mutschli (CHF 24 a kilo) and mountain cheese (CHF 25 to CHF 30 a kilo) in the alpine cheese dairy (Kandersteg BE, 1361) we also sell sweet and salty «Ziger», sheep and goat cheese.
Ballenberg sausages, made according to an old recipe: follow your nose: have a look at the ceiling of our farmhouse from Madiswil (321) - it has lots of spicy Ballenberg sausages and sides of bacon hanging from it. We smoke these according to an old traditional practice and sell them in our sausage shop (Ostermundigen BE, 331). The delicious aroma of high quality meat and strong herbs is wafted through the air. The recipe? An old domestic recipe, strictly secret. Sorry!
