Play to your heart’s content: Ballenberg has an array of playgrounds for families with children. Its large adventure playground with petting enclosure and woodland playground are particularly popular options. Both are located centrally within the museum and near the Ballenberg eateries.
The large adventure playground is located right at the heart of the open-air museum. A climbing tower, a long slide, wooden horses and a historic bowling alley offer near-unlimited opportunities for fun. While younger visitors let off steam, their parents can enjoy a coffee from the Circus Trailer snack bar or take the weight off their feet at the Degen restaurant. The playground also has seats and a fireplace for you to use. If your sweet tooth is calling out for a treat, head to the kiosk from Bönigen (1041) and enjoy its exquisite handmade sweets.
At the petting enclosure on the Balm you can finally see the little goats and the sweet piglets up close. Right next to the bowling alley you can hear the goats bleating. Go into the enclosure, stroke our cute Ballenberg inhabitants and watch them as they leap around you. In the grounds of the Museum – unique in Switzerland – 200 native farm animals are represented: bees, pigeons, birds, hens, ducks, geese, rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle and oxen, horses and donkeys. At Ballenberg you’ll be amazed to find some farmyard animals that were in danger of becoming extinct. Ballenberg is also home to a large number of young animals including lambs, a family of piglets, baby rabbits, a Haflinger foal and a calf – children will love them.
Why not hop on our historic carousel, located just opposite the petting enclosure, for a ride? Enjoy all the fun of the fair: a delight for adults and children alike.
Rides on our historic carousel are not included in the admission price. Thank you for your understanding.
At the heart of the woodland playground is the old field barn, known as the “Weidschürli”. Once you’re inside, it’s time to search for clues: the dormouse building gives an insight into the world of this nocturnal rodent. In the cave, large display cases show the individual life stages of the dormouse. There is a fairytale station on the upper floor of the field barn. Stuffed jute bags provide the opportunity to enjoy stacking and building, or simply relaxing for a while. Outdoors, children can explore the “Meeting at the edge of the forest” station, where kids can play and relax in a sandpit and on wooden deck chairs.
