On 23 May 2026, the Swiss Open-Air Museum will become a living nature laboratory: on Biodiversity Day, get together with experts to discover the fascinating world of animals, plants and fungi right on our doorstep.

A voyage of discovery with the BioBlitz principle
In a single day, the museum searches for, identifies and documents as many species as possible in what is known as a “BioBlitz”. Whether birds, insects, wildflowers or moss: every discovery counts and brings biodiversity directly to life. And, at the end of the day, you can find out the results.
Market stalls and tours
At market stalls in the “East Midlands” area and on guided walks, experts will provide fascinating insights and show how we can all contribute to the promotion of biodiversity. Children and adults go on the hunt for clues together in this playful and educational activity, surrounded by nature.
Why biodiversity matters
Ballenberg combines meadows, forests, gardens and historic buildings to create a unique cultural landscape – a valuable habitat for many species, some of which are rare. Biodiversity Day highlights how important this diversity is to our lives and how we can protect it.
