Mixed-reality experience in the house from Adelboden

A building with many faces! Youth hostel, home, farmhouse, restaurant and more. Guests can explore more about the history of the Farmhouse from Adelboden (1011) and its inhabitants through mixed reality experiences.

Das Bauernhaus aus Bonderlen / Adelboden BE (1011) im Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg.

Insights into the tourism history of Adelboden

The Farmhouse from Adelboden, which has been at Ballenberg since 1968, bears witness to the changes that tourism has brought to Adelboden and to the Bernese Oberland in general.

The Hari-Germann family, who lived there, played an active part in this development. The farmhouse was built in 1698; 200 years later, it was also used as a basic hostel and restaurant. It accommodated guests from half of Europe and offered tours, help on local farms, food and accommodation.

Signs of this use are either not accessible in the building or were not transferred to Ballenberg, such as the adjoining restaurant.

This is where an app developed by HSLU comes in. It lets guests immerse themselves in the times around 1900 through three experiences. The contents are based on a dissertation about the house by architect and cultural anthropologist Stefan Kunz entitled “Zwischen bäuerlicher Tradition und touristischer Moderne” [“Between peasant tradition and tourism-based modernity”] (2025), which uses the house to illustrate the changing significance of landscapes and houses.

Three experiences in one app

Twice a week, Ballenberg guests can explore the history of the building and its residents, equipped with a smartphone and instructed by a staff member. They listen to the living room stove, which has come to life, as it tells of the young people sleeping above its head in the large dormitory. Collecting flowers on a smartphone, animated photographs pop up showing tourist motifs and related information. And finally, the restaurant is digitally reconstructed while two hikers ponder the emergence of tourism in Adelboden.

In development

This activity is interactive. As this is new to Ballenberg, feedback from visitors and employees is very valuable. Any feedback will be incorporated into the further development of the app. The finished product will be available in the Adelboden Farmhouse from the 2027 season onwards.

The activity is currently only available in German. However, two of the experiences can also be tried out regardless of language.
